I am starting a new venture. Well, actually my son and his wife are starting a new venture, at my request. It should be fun and interesting.
Here’s the deal. My son is a history major and a teacher. Earlier this year he said he wanted to learn about business. There is not a better way to learn than to do. So my bright idea? Let’s start a small business together and I will teach you what I know about business.
We have rented a booth at an antique mall. Neither my wife and I, nor Tim and Erin, have any experience with this type of business, so we will all learn. But it is, I hope, a low risk way to start and operate a business. My goal is to give my son an opportunity to learn about business in a way that I believe will be better than going back to school and taking business courses. A secondary goal is to journal the experience with the hope of teaching others about operating a small business. I hope the experience will be a case study to help me write The Potts & Company Guide to Starting and Operating a Small Business (Profitably). Tim’s goal is to learn how to start and run a small business and to make some extra money to supplement his modest teacher’s salary. Erin’s goal is to support Tim. My wife’s goal is to stay away from the project, but I bet we get her opinions.
